Carson City is the capitol of Nevada, and not part of any county. It is the only independent city in Nevada. It used to be the county seat of Ormsby County, but in 1969 the state abolished the county and merged all of its territory into the city. Because the county no longer exists, Carson City functions as a county‑equivalent for census and administrative purposes. Result: Carson City is both a city and its own county‑level jurisdiction, with boundaries that still follow the old Ormsby County footprint — extending west across the Sierra Nevada to the California state line in the middle of Lake Tahoe.
Carson City Public Works - You'll want to visit this web site when setting up residential water service, but electricity is provided by NV Energy, as it is in most of Nevada, with the exception of Henderson & North Las Vegas.
